C. Holland van
Suchtelen was born in Beverwijk, the Netherlands in 1949
and moved to Canada in 1951. She attended the University of
Western Ontario to earn a degree in Natural Sciences and
later studied at the Ontario College of Art and
Sheridan College. She began her 35 year career with oil
painting and graphic design and went on to stained
glass and sculpture and is now working with acrylic paints
and pencil.
She earned
recognition as one of Ontario's foremost artists while she
lived and worked in Barrie and Toronto, Ontario. She
now resides in Vancouver, BC. Her works are in
private collections across Canada and the United States.
She says:
"I cannot live without my work. It is as necessary to
me as breathing and friendships. It's odd but, if I don't
work, a seriously large part of me is just a shadow in this
world. Artistry wakes me up, engages all of me in a way
that nothing else does - so I'm guessing that this is what
I was born to do with my life."
I am a proud
owner of several of her works from throughout her career
and I can describe them as original, imaginative, extremely
skilled and completely beautiful and alive. Her color sense
is flawless and I anticipate this showing will be an
explosion of new forms and juxtapositions so inherent in
her lifetime of insistent exploration.
